One Heart at a Time

We just got back from vacation. Good family time. To be honest, after a year of mediating problems, putting out ‘brush fires’ & ministering to people in need I wasn’t exactly looking forward to spending marathon time at amusement parks. When you are getting to the point of overload with the human race the first place you want to run is Orlando & hundreds of thousands of people right?!

At one of the theme parks my son & I were waiting on my wife. We just listened for a moment & all around us was a cacophony of noise. It wasn’t just the amusement park rides but rather people. In a matter of moments we heard languages from all over the globe!

We had some great times on thrill rides (although on the ride “Mummy’s Revenge” the Mummy got revenge on me!) & a relaxing time at Cocoa Beach. As we looked down once it looked like ants scurrying around; thousands of people, souls & lives.

After 4 days & as many amusement parks my agitation with the constant dodging of bodies hurtled at me was somewhat abating. Normally I love people. My heart & passion is to share God’s love with all around me. I’ve got to admit, I’m human & the toll of months of squabbles, problems & issues had worn on me. Out of nowhere God took me by surprise. As He always does, He brought my heart & mind around to where it needs to be. It wasn’t in a quiet time or peaceful solace of a tranquil nature scene, but rather right in the midst of bobbing & weaving through a sea of humanity out to beat one another to the next ride. We were in a shop selling stuff to help preserve endangered animals. After a series of fade left, dodge right I found a small spot with no one hustling around. I glanced to my right & saw a shirt with a globe & the Red Cross sign on it with the title, “Save the Planet.” It hit me. That’s exactly what God is about. He reminded me He’s out to save to planet one heart & soul at a time.

While we were on the beach one day a fisherman snagged a Manta Ray. Everyone crowded around as the freed the creature & sent it back to the ocean. It reminded me of the story of a young boy on the beach one morning. The tide had washed up scores of star fish & he was throwing them back to sea one by one. A man came up, a cynic spoiled on life, and said, “it won’t matter. You’re wasting your time. You can’t save all of them.” The boy had just picked up a star fish & looked down at it then to the hardened man. He threw it back into the surf and said, “it matters to him. I saved him anyway.”

Jesus once warned, “Take heed that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that in heaven their angels always see the face of My Father who is in heaven. For the Son of Man has come to save that which was lost. “What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them goes astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine and go to the mountains to seek the one that is straying?” Matthew 18:10-12 NKJV

I’m reminded that’s why I’m here. I’m here to help & encourage others. I’m here to help the lost home.

That message was driven home more when we were flying home. As we hustled to get out of the rental car to make our flight, we left my keys & wallet. As I was about to check my bags I realized the loss. I rushed back & found the car had already been sent off. After an hour of nervous anticipation the folks at Avis were helpful & kind enough to help retrieve the lost items before the car was turned around.

I’m sure God longs after His lost sheep more than I did the loss of my identity & personal possessions. I’m almost over being tired of hassles & problems. Truth be told, the only time I’ll ever find complete rest is the other side of eternity. So here’s to looking for lost ones, & ‘saving the planet’ one heart & soul at a time.
