There are times people call for counseling or encouragement that I literally cry out to God in my heart. The situations & problems that are shared with me rend your heart! “My husband has abused my daughter & what do I do?” “I don’t want to live! I’m seriously considering suicide but I have a small little boy.” “My Daddy just died.” “My wife left me & my little girl wants to know where she is.”
There are times I feel like saying, “Do you realize I’m just a yahoo with barely sense enough to put my socks on the right feet?” Instead, I cry out to God for wisdom & direction in what to say & where to refer those that I need to refer.
I’ve come to understand that no amount of counseling preparation & training ever suffice enough to help you feel completely confident in helping & encouraging another human being. I guess that’s a good place to be…always asking God for divine guidance & knowing when you don’t know enough.
Maybe you’re not called upon to help someone with a life altering situation or have to encourage someone at 2 in the morning who has swallowed a bottle of pills or someone who has lost their child. Nonetheless, I’m sure you must make life altering decisions for your own life.
James, the brother of Jesus, wrote to the early church these words about asking God for wisdom, “If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking. But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind.” James 1:5-6 NLT.
Key is right there. The source of all wisdom is God. If we need wisdom we have to trust in Him & ask for His direction. Here’s to calling out to God with undivided loyalty!
