Today, while visiting the hospital, I ran into an old acquaintance & had to think where I knew him from. I also ran into a friend from ASUN visiting his mother who was having memory problems. I shared how my own uncle is going through some of the same things. My dad is saddened that his youngest brother has trouble remembering childhood memories & even some family members.
While at camp recently, I asked a friend about his daughter’s early words etc. He said, “I don’t remember!” I had forgotten he had a head trauma a year or so back that wiped much of those memories away. The memory is an amazing thing. God wired us to have a small part of our brain, called the hippocampus, which stores memories. They can range from wonderful moments to childhood terrors. Whether good or bad memories, it’s amazing this tiny part of our brain holds so much dear to us.
The outer areas of our ‘grey matter’ hold much of these stored events from the past. While protected by our ‘thick skulls’ it’s still fragile. I’m always amazed when God brings back people from severe head trauma.
We know SOME about the human brain & memory. So much of Alzheimer’s & senile dementia is still unknown as is Autism & other related problems. Even at best we forget things, even important things at the worst times. But think of this, one day we can stand before God perfect & never forgetting another thing. We will be able to see people from all through history & know them just as they’ll know us! When we have a relationship with God we are assured that He has prepared a place where no precious memories will ever be lost again.
“Now we see things imperfectly as in a cloudy mirror, but then we will see everything with perfect clarity. All that I know now is partial and incomplete, but then I will know everything completely, just as God now knows me completely.” I Corinthians 13:12 NLT
I pray you use this blessed brain & heart God has given us to decide to daily follow Him. Know this, He’ll never forget you either!
